Lawn aeration and dethatching

Salem clay, nine months of rain and a lot of shade. That is a recipe for compaction, thatch and moss. This is the fix.

Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs out of the lawn. It opens up compacted soil so water, air and fertilizer get to the roots instead of running off or sitting on top. The plugs break down on their own in a week or two.

Dethatching rakes out the layer of dead grass and moss that builds up between the blades and the soil. In the Valley, that layer is usually half moss. Pulling it gives new growth room and makes overseeding actually work.

Done together, once a year, they do more for a tired lawn than anything else short of starting over.

When to book in Salem

Early fall is the best window in Salem, when the soil is moist and the grass is growing again. Spring works well too, once the ground dries out enough not to smear.

Signs it's time

  • Moss is winning in the shady spots
  • Water puddles on the lawn after rain
  • The lawn feels spongy underfoot
  • Grass is thin even though you water it

Aeration & Dethatching FAQ

Should I aerate or dethatch?

If the lawn is spongy and mossy, dethatch. If it's hard and water sits on it, aerate. Most Salem lawns need both.

Will this get rid of my moss?

It pulls out a lot of it and fixes the conditions moss loves. Shade and poor drainage are the root cause, and we'll tell you honestly what we see.

Do I leave the plugs?

Yes. They break down in a week or two and put soil back on top of the lawn.
