Bark dust and mulch installation

Nothing changes how a house looks from the street faster than fresh bark dust with a clean edge.

In Oregon we call it bark dust. Everybody else calls it mulch. Either way, it does three jobs: it holds moisture through a dry summer, it keeps weeds from getting a start, and it makes a tired yard look new in an afternoon.

The spreading is the easy part. The prep is what makes it last. We weed the beds first, cut a clean edge between the bed and the lawn, then spread at a depth that actually blocks weeds without smothering your plants.

Dark hemlock for a rich finish, fir for a natural look, or whatever you have in mind. Tell us the look and we'll bring the material.

When to book in Salem

Spring is the classic time, after the beds are cleaned up and before weeds take off. Fall bark dust is underrated: it protects roots through the winter and the yard looks sharp all season.

Signs it's time

  • Your beds are more dirt than bark
  • Weeds come back every two weeks
  • Bark has faded to gray
  • You're getting the house ready to list

Bark Dust & Mulch Installation FAQ

How deep should bark dust be?

Around two to three inches in most beds. Enough to block weeds, not so much that it piles against plant stems.

Hemlock or fir?

Hemlock is darker and finer and looks the most finished. Fir is a little coarser and lasts a bit longer. Both work well here.

Do you remove old bark first?

Usually not needed. We clean it up and top it. If it's piled too deep already, we'll pull some back.
